St Petroc’s Church hosts Festival of Quilts
Around 70 quilts all hand made by a local group are on display at St Petroc’s Church in Padstow this week and for one lucky person there will be the chance to take one home.
As well as being able to see the impressive handiwork and artistry of the quilts, visitors can also enter a raffle to win a large quilt which was made by members of the River Camel Quilters.
The River Camel Quilters have been busy sewing up a storm to get ready for their first show in four years. The group of 16 aged 30 to 87 have produced all the quilts and the show features many themes from Christmas, the sea and children to harvest and flowers.
Organisers and group members Linda Morley and Tilly Watts spent around three days putting the displays together with help from friends and family and their efforts have been rewarded with a steady stream of visitors over the first two days. Tilly said: “We’ve had over 80 people each day come in to see the quilts.”
The money raised from this year’s show will go towards the church’s Coracle (tower) appeal. Linda said: “We hope this year will be as successful as our last one in 2012. That year we raised £3,000.”
The River Camel Quilters also put their efforts to good use raising money for the Mount Edgcumbe Hospice. Linda said: “This year so far we’ve raised £300 for them. Our group meets once a week and each member pays 50p. That money is then put towards a donation to the hospice.”
The group always welcome new people. Tilly said: “We meet in the Church Rooms in Padstow and we do several types of sewing, patchwork and embroidery and even the dreaded mending!”
Linda added: “We enjoy lots of chatter, beverages and cake. If you are interested in joining but feel a little shy or are not confident about your sewing, there are plenty of us who will be able to set you in the right direction.”

The Quilt Festival runs until Sunday evening so there is still time to pop along and enjoy it.
