Diocesan Board of Education & Education Team

Each diocese has, like us, a Diocesan Board of Education (DBE) who have core functions set out in legislation within the ‘DBE Measure’.

This is the primary piece of legislation that formalises the partnership between the Church of England and the state in the delivery of non-selective education provision for the common good of those of all faiths and none.

The Measure sets out that each diocese must:

  • Promote or assist in the promotion of education in the diocese that is consistent with the faith and practice of the Church of England.
  • Promote or assist in the promotion of religious education and religious worship in schools in the diocese
  • Promote or assist in the promotion of church schools in the diocese
  • Promote cooperation between itself and others concerned with education in the diocese

An explanation of the measure and what this means in practice is available here.
