General Synod safeguarding vote
We are pleased that General Synod has overwhelmingly approved (392 for, 6 abstentions, 9 against) the introduction of independent scrutiny and oversight of safeguarding at every level of the church, and to do so as the highest possible priority. We are also pleased that further work will now be undertaken on the possibility of further independence.
We understand the concern for some that the decision by General Synod did not go far enough, and Bishop Hugh was disappointed that full independence – often called ‘Option 4’, was not passed.
We continue to have great confidence in our diocesan and cathedral safeguarding team, noting that the recent independent INEQE audit of safeguarding in the diocese strongly endorsed the effectiveness of safeguarding here.
During a time of change we encourage everyone to stay focused on the basics of safeguarding; recognising where there is need and responding well, recording concerns appropriately, and supporting victims, survivors and those who report harm. Recognise; Respond; Record; Support.
Bishop elect David, Bishop Hugh, Episcopal College and the Safeguarding team remain utterly committed to improving and developing our own culture and practice on safeguarding and to leading the diocese in that way.
We recognise that work will now begin on the legal and practical requirements necessary to move towards model 4. We will work to ensure that, whatever arrangements are in place now and in the future, parishes in Cornwall have the guidance and support they need to make our churches safer.
