Archdeacon Bill cuts the ribbon to declare the hall once again officially open.

The choir from the Godrevy Team of Churches sang as the Ven Bill Stuart-White, Archdeacon of Cornwall, reopened St Erth Old School.

The hall had been closed since 2013, following advice from the insurance company that said the roof was unstable and in danger of collapsing. And once work started on the repair of the roof, it was discovered that the building needed completely rewiring and a new heating system had to be installed.

Barbara Read, Churchwarden at St Erth, said: “Although the main structural work was completed by professional builders, much of the work on this project has been carried out by volunteers from the church and the village community.  Thank you to everyone who has helped.”

The PCC employed a fundraiser to help raise the money needed – which has come in at approximately £125,000 in grants, and more than £10,000 raised locally at church and village events, and from personal donations.

The opening was a busy and sociable affair.

The church had grants from Sita, Cory, Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation, the Garfield Weston Foundation, National Lottery,  the Trusthouse Charitable Foundation,  The Beatrice Laing Trust, Cornwall Heritage Trust, and the Stephen Clark 1957 Charitable Trust.

The refurbishment has also involved a new kitchen, flooring and new toilets. The  Godrevy Team of Churches has also had an office built in what was the doctor’s room, for the team administrator.
