Exporting Anglicanism: Missionary problems at home and abroad

June 12 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Mark Chapman will explore some of the problems that emerged in the early years of the twentieth century in the mission field, with a focus on East Africa. He will focus on the great but intransigent Anglo-Catholic Bishop of Zanzibar Frank Weston and how he found himself in conflict with more Evangelical expressions of Anglicanism. This session will look at how these old disputes continue to affect the Anglican Communion and even the Church of England.

Mark David Chapman is a British Anglican priest, theologian, historian, and academic. He was Vice-Principal of Ripon College Cuddesdon from 2002-2024, and has been Full Professor of the History of Modern Theology at the University of Oxford since 2015.
Mark is Canon Theologian at Truro Cathedral.
