Church Explorers – West Penwith

Worker’s Educational Association (WEA) Courses for Adults Summer 2016

Building on classroom learning, ‘Church Explorers West Penwith’ focuses on the churches of St Levan and St Buryan. St Levan was a chapelry of St Buryan and this is reflected in its simpler architecture and lop-sided plan, but the quality of its bench ends is as good as any in Cornwall. St Buryan, by contrast, is a much larger and architecturally more ambitious church with an exceptional, if inaccurately, restored rood screen. This morning visit will involve looking more closely at the visual fabric and furnishings of two of West Penwith’s most interesting churches.
