Church in coffee shop leads to confirmations
When church is the people, worship can take place anywhere – including a coffee shop.
A group of young people aged between 10 and 18 years old have been meeting in a coffee shop near to Sainsbury’s in Penzance, to learn more about Christianity.
Named ChatGOD, those attending are invited to watch the Youth Alpha course online during the week and then bring their questions and observations for discussion to the café.
The idea came from young people in the area who wanted to explore faith and offer a space for others they know to join them.
And 10 of the young people asked to be confirmed at St Levan Church by he Rt Revd David Williams, Bishop of Truro.
Revd Adam Thomas said: “It was thought a cafe was a safe space for everyone to attend without feeling they had to make a commitment of faith straight away.
“We use scripture to help us explore the bigger questions that the young people have, they express their own views and challenge one another and we pray together, as well as have a drink and share cake.
“Costa have been extremely welcoming and couldn’t do more for us.”
ChatGOD takes place once a fortnight at 5.30pm. It was set up at the Sennen Surf Lodge in Sennen Cove but they moved to the cafe in Penzance while the Surf Lodge closed for winter. They hope to move back to Sennen Cove and meet on the beach when the weather improves.
