Creationtide is the annual event in the Church of England’s calendar to celebrate God’s creation and renew a promise to look after our planet.Logo reads 'Creation Care' and has a green, blue and red strip after the word 'care'.

Many churches hold special services to mark the event, which runs from September 1 to October 4.

In this series we are highlighting some of the ways people in the Diocese of Truro care for creation.

Ben Wood, Cut Carbon Support Officer (Churches), is working around the clock to help people make their churches more comfortable, healthy, and welcoming environments while reducing energy bills.

This Creationtide he is offering a carbon cutting tip: Think about increasing the use of carpets in buildings – especially now summer is passing and autumn is setting in.

Ben said: “Carpets are super effective, economical and a low-tech way to cut foot contact with the cold floor and can make a real difference to thermal perception and comfort.

“It’s an old technology, it’s tried, it’s tested, it’s cheap, and it’s effective.

“Carpets and rugs break the contact between the cold stone floors and our feet, and they hugely improve thermal comfort.”Image shows a church floor - one with a normal camera and one with a heat detecting camera.

He illustrates this point with two photographs – one with a regular camera and one with a thermal imaging camera.

He said: “You can see the carpeted area is over four centigrade warmer. This could be even greater with a better rug or carpet.

“So, they are permissible under List A and B rules if not fixed or covering ancient monuments.”
