More diocese churches to count nature in 2026
More congregations across the diocese have signed up to take part in this year’s Churches Count on Nature Week – and there’s still time to get your church involved too.
It runs from Saturday June 6 until June 14, and members of the charity, Caring For God’s Acre, are calling on communities to record wildlife and biodiversity in their church yards.
Dr Sharon Willoghby, Diocesan Environment Officer recently told members of the Diocese of Truro’s Creation Care Network there were already 10 events planned in the county – up from the two which took place in 2025.
She said: “It is really pleasing to see more communities involved in this important project.”
The annual count has taken place across the UK for about the last 16 years, celebrating wildlife in churchyards.
Harriet Carty, from Caring for God’s Acre, explained how Churches Count on Nature helps to record the abundant biodiversity in UK churchyards.
She added churchyards and the churchyard walls can be older than the church itself – sometimes dating back to Saxon days.
She said: “We want to know about all the things within the churchyard. We want to know about the mole holes, squirrels, and also British lichen. We would love to know about all the species in your church yard.
“If you do want to run an event there is still time to do so.”
So far, churches in the diocese taking part include St Tudy, St Mabyn, St Kea Church, Old Kea, St Nicholas, Devoran Church, St Cuberts, St Mary’s, Biscovey, St Hydrock and St Just in Penwith.
