Children’s Harvest poetry impresses
The Diocese of Truro held a Creationtide Harvest Poetry competition for pupils in church schools around the county – and the winners have been announced.
Judges and organisers were excited with the quality and number of entries submitted. After reading scores of creative poems, full of literary techniques and imaginations, the judges were finally able to pick the winners – and hand out lots of well deserved ‘Highly Commended’ stickers.
The winners were: Felicity from Duloe Church of England School, Tyack from St Issey Church of England School, Elowen from Grade Ruan Church of England School and Meghan from St. Catherine’s Church of England school
Judges comments included notes on children’s clever use of repetition, ‘lovely’ use of sounds, ‘using words creatively’, using contrasts and devising words which created pictures in the mind of a judge.
The poems are have also been on display by St. Mary’s Aisle in Truro Cathedral for members of the public to stop and read.
Clare Green, Schools’ Creation Care Officer and Flourish Link Officer at Diocese of Truro, said: “It was such a pleasure to read the wonderful poetry from the children, and I was very glad I didn’t have to choose a winner.
“I was very impressed with the effort that had gone into the lovely presentation of the work. All the entrants had worked really hard.”
Creationtide is the annual event in the church calendar to celebrate God’s creation and renew a promise to look after our planet.
Many churches hold special services to mark the event, which runs from September 1 to October 4.
The poetry competition was a way of including children and young people across the diocese in the event.
