Conference: Challenging the Myths – Domestic Violence
The third annual diocesan Safeguarding Conference takes place on February 24 at Truro Cathedral.
This year’s theme is Challenging the Myths: Domestic Violence and seeks to challenge and explore the facts and myths around domestic abuse, its often-hidden nature and growing prevalence.
During the day there will be the opportunity to hear from survivors and practitioners as well as explore how churches can recognise, respond, assist, and encourage those affected by domestic abuse.
There will be a marketplace with national and local support organisations present to offer information, advice and support.
The diocese is pleased to be able to welcome Dr Maryyum Mehmood, Research and Policy Advisor (Spiritual Abuse Lead) to the Domestic Abuse Commissioner of England and Wales as keynote speaker on the day.
Maryyum’s area of specialism covers societally marginalised groups, and she leads on the Office’s work on spiritual or faith-based abuse, ‘honour’-based violence, harmful practices and international affairs.
Also, on display at the conference will be a new art exhibition created by abuse survivors. The exhibition runs from February 18 to February 28. Entry is free.
There will be a lunch provided to attendees, so booking is essential.
