Not just Christmas Carols but New Street Christmas Carols
Time moves quickly and never more so than at Christmas. Even the recent winds seem to be hurrying us along, adding to the sense of panic and worry that we won’t get things done. So it was wonderful to stop and linger awhile in the beautiful music that welcomed everybody who walked into the brand new New Street Church, Falmouth last Sunday evening.
It was an evening of Christmas carols and was this new church’s first event ahead of their official opening in January next year. But these weren’t just Christmas carols, these were New Street Carols! All the Carols everyone knows and loves but sung in a way that makes you want to get up and dance.
A taste of what is to come
For an introductory taste of what’s to come from New Street it was very exciting. The welcome was warm, the music was great and the message spot on. A film of a very modern nativity played, bringing home how hard it would have been for a young Mary to be pregnant before being married, and how devastating it would have been for Joseph to know that his beloved fiancé was carrying a child that wasn’t his.
Revd Chris Hassell, New Street Church’s Pioneer Minister , said, “We wanted to do something before Christmas that captured the spirit of who we feel called to be as a church. We love the fact that such a diverse group of people, of all ages and from Falmouth and afar, got together to celebrate Christmas by worshipping Jesus.”

The story of the star
At such a busy time, it was encouraging to be energised by the music but it was also lovely to just be still and enjoy the spaces that the evening allowed. In one of those quiet spaces was the narration of The Story of the Star. It asked if we found it strange that the star had a voice. “You think the trees do not speak? And the wind carries no message? You think the waves have no song?….Creation speaks – it is simply a question of language.”
The star was present at the greatest moment in our history, when out of the silence, “And in a thousand different tongues we say one thing, ‘He is here, he has come’…
“So there you are
And here He is
And that is my tale
And all that stands between you and the dark
Is me and a child
And a humble heart
God is with us.
Emmanuel.”
And there we were and there He was, in the joy of singing Carols in a new church not even officially open, packed full of over a hundred people.
New Street Church officially opens on Sunday 13th January at 4pm in the King Charles Theatre.
