Join Bishop Chris on St Michael’s Way
Modern day Cornish pilgrims are invited to step out for their global neighbour and join the Rt Revd Chris Goldsmith in a coast to coast walk along St Michael’s Way this Christian Aid Week (May 15-21).
The Bishop of St Germans and a band of sponsored walkers will trace the footsteps of ancient pilgrims along the 12.5 mile long route from Lelant to Marazion on Friday May 20 raising funds for the world’s most disadvantaged families.
The walkers will be part of an army of supporters across Cornwall raising funds during the week which this year will focus on desperately precarious communities on the edge of survival by merciless rivers in Bangladesh.
As the longest-running community fundraising event in the UK, Christian Aid Week unites over 20,000 churches across the country and in 2015 raised more than £11 million for our global neighbours in need.
Bishop Chris said: “The original pilgrims placed their trust in God and stepped out boldly not knowing what lay before them.
“This Christian Aid Week walk is being held under quite different circumstances many centuries later but at the heart of it is the same desire to give witness to God and to live out his commandment to love our neighbour – whether that neighbour is in the next house or village or on the other side of the world.
“Too many people still do not know what the next storm or season will bring. Christian Aid works to build resilience for people across the world so that they might have security and hope.
“I would be delighted to see many supporters on May 20 – please do join me in taking a stand for life before death.”
Christian Aid’s regional coordinator for Cornwall Chris Jadav who will be joining Bishop Chris on the walk, said: “We are walking 12.5 miles but hope is just six feet away for impoverished Bangladeshi families. Every £200 we raise means we could lift a a Bangladeshi family’s home by six feet to a safe level on an earth plinth and a walker who raises £6 sponsorship per mile would raise enough to help a family start duck or chicken rearing.
“Everyone is welcome to take part in the walk and enjoy not only our beautiful Cornish landscape but also the powerful sense of being part of a nationwide movement of people stepping out for global justice.”
