with Revd Canon Dr Stephen Dawes
Dealing with the basic issues of Biblical scholarship in today’s Church: All priests, ministers, Readers and Local Preachers are trained in what we might call classic Biblical scholarship and have been for over a century. Yet often when interested lay people are introduced to some of the mildest and most commonplace ideas of classic Biblical scholarship they ask ‘Why have we not heard this before?’ Why indeed. This session will explore the gap between the classroom and the pulpit and the strange silence of a century of Biblical scholarship in today’s church. It will work on the assumption that if the Church of England is to be true to Hooker and the Methodist Church to Wesley and Peake, that dangerous gap must be closed.
Stephen is a retired Methodist minister and Canon Theologian of Truro Cathedral.
