SUMMARY:Mendelssohn's Elijah
DESCRIPTION:Three Spires Singers and Truro Choral Society present Mendelssohn’s Elijah \n‘A rare opportunity to hear the combined forces of two large choirs and big orchestra performing this much-loved work by a famous and popular composer. The Oratorio\, which is sung in English\, takes its words from the Old Testament of the Bible to tell the story of the prophet Elijah. It is an intensely dramatic work at times\, with the noise and fury of crowds and warring Gods\, for example\, or the ascent of a fiery chariot into heaven\, portrayed in stirring and colourful music from orchestra and chorus. There are contemplative\, beautiful moments too\, such as the resurrection of a dead youth\, or the coming of rain after a deadly drought.’ \nConsisting off four vocal soloists – bass-baritone\, tenor\, alto and soprano. Each have memorably tuneful arias as well as sometimes combining in duets\, trios and quartets. The work contains melodies\, dramatic scenes\, and wonderfully tender moments. There will also be four soloists – Christopher Cull\, Alexander James Edwards\, Catherine Carby and Anita Watson. The conductor will be The Director of Music at Truro Cathedral. \nTickets to Mendelssohn’s Elijah will cost £16 and £21 and under 18s £8 and £10.50\, and can be bought from The Hall For Cornwall Box Office\, tel: 01872 262466 or email: www.hallforcornwall.co.uk \nThe event will take place on Saturday the 24th of June 2017\, 7:30pm at Truro Cathedral. \n

SUMMARY:Crafting the Cathedral Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The collaboration between Falmouth University’s BA. (Hons) Contemporary Crafts course and Truro Cathedral has run for several years and has always proved to be stimulating\, challenging and very rewarding.  This year the students have been asked to make works that correspond to the material and metaphorical fabric of this incredible building.  Site visits and exploratory research has led Contemporary Crafts students to find unique ways of interpreting and communicating some of the stories and qualities of Truro Cathedral that have captured their attention. Their ideas are being communicated through many material processes and techniques; these include diverse approaches to materials such as glass\, ceramic and wood.   \nFree – Exhibition runs in Truro Cathedral until 16 February \n

SUMMARY:‘Be a Chorister for a Day’ event
DESCRIPTION:Truro Cathedral and Truro School to host ‘Be a Chorister for a Day’ event \nOn Tuesday 15 November\, Truro Cathedral and Truro School will be hosting a ‘Be a Chorister for A Day’ event. \nThe day will give girls the chance to experience life as a Chorister\, from morning rehearsal through to school lessons\, finishing with a short service of Evensong\, where they will have the chance to sing with Truro Cathedral Choir. \nRecruitment for girl Choristers at Truro Cathedral starts from the age of 13\, so the event is open to girls who are currently in Year 7 or 8. \nDirector of Music at Truro Cathedral\, Christopher Gray\, says: “Being a Chorister can be a truly life-changing and life-enhancing experience for the right girl. Aside from the benefits of singing at the highest level almost every day\, the girls perform with leading national groups such as the City of London Sinfonia and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales; they will record their first CD this year; and as we recently announced\, they will be working with renowned composer\, Dobrinka Tabakova\, who will be writing music specially for them. All of this is on top of their regular routine singing live to tens of thousands of people every year at Truro Cathedral as part of its celebrated choir.” \nTruro Cathedral Choir is directed by specialist\, professional musicians and gives the girls the chance to perform in one of the finest buildings in the South West. The choir has built up an outstanding reputation\, taking part in live broadcasts for television and radio and joining in foreign tours. \nHeadmaster of Truro School\, Andrew Gordon-Brown\, says: “I cannot overstate how impressed I have been with our chorister programme which is now in its second year of operation. Singing with the nationally renowned Truro Cathedral Choir\, the girls have gone from strength to strength and are already achieving great things. This is indeed a unique opportunity for these girls to develop as individuals and make the most of their musical talent.” \nGirls who join the choir are welcomed into a supportive environment\, where they develop character and form leadership skills whilst nurturing a high level of chorister training and performance. \nThe cathedral’s girl Choristers are recruited from all across Cornwall and beyond; if successful the girls attend Truro School\, where they receive scholarship and bursary support for their education. \nTo find out more about the day\, visit: www.truroschool.com/be-a-chorister-for-a-day-15-november-2016. Places for the event are free of charge\, please contact Truro School’s Director of Admissions\, Jayne Grigg\, on 01872 272763 or at admissions@truroschool.com to reserve a place.

SUMMARY:'One World Week’ at the Cathedral
DESCRIPTION:Each year Truro Cathedral takes part in ‘One World Week’ which marks United Nations Day on 24th October. \nEach year One World Week is celebrated in the Cathedral with a number of separate but linked events all focusing around a particular theme. This year’s theme is ‘Including You’ and particularly as it relates to migration. \nRobin and Mard Sellwood are members of the Cathedral congregation and they said\, “One World Week is an annual opportunity for people to come together from diverse backgrounds and learn a little bit about other people’s lives\, building relationships and mutual respect along the way. Its aim is to draw attention to the fact that the world consists of one human race which shares one planet. This year we are hoping to show how local organisations are helping to relieve the Refugee crisis”. \nRowley Surridge has just returned from a trip to the Calais refugee camp and said\, “The refugee crisis is not about to go away. Those soon to be moved from the Jungle (Calais camp) by the French authorities to other camps will not change the situation only relocate it. The fact that there are refuges in often squalid conditions shows that as yet there is not the political will to care for these people in a manner that befits a western developed country such as ours or many in the EU”. \nSome of the events going on at the Cathedral during One World Week include: \nThe One World Week Exhibition which starts on Sunday 23rd October (running through until 30th) which features a number of local\, national and international organisations including The Eden Project\, Shelterbox\, Mid Cornwall United Nations Association and All Saints\, Highertown. The exhibition runs for a week and is free and features the work and projects of these organisations. \nThis year the special Evensong to mark United Nations Day will take place in the cathedral on Sunday 23rd October at 4pm and will be sung by St Mary’s Singers. \nFor more information visit the cathedral website www.trurocathedral.org.uk

SUMMARY:Great British Choral Anthems
DESCRIPTION:Truro Cathedral Choir and the City of London Sinfonia on 30 September at 7:30 pm \nSpectacular\, rousing and awe-inspiring – Handel’s Coronation Anthems are made for the great settings of our nation’s cathedrals\, resounding under their vast stone vaults for hundreds of years. Spanning those centuries\, James MacMillan\, one of Britain’s most revered composers\, has written his own anthem especially for this national tour with support from Friends of Cathedral Music. And Bach’s music is poignant elegance in sound\, synonymous with perfection. There are few sounds as stirring as our cathedral choristers raising their voices in song\, and they really soar when united with an orchestra like the world-class City of London Sinfonia. \nThis is the ticketing information for the London Sinfonia with Truro Cathedral Choir concert on 30 September 2016 at 7:30 pm. \nTickets online from cls.co.uk (24 hours) or telephone 020 7621 2800 (weekdays 10 am – 6pm) \nAdults £10-£25. Children £5\, full-time students and 16-25s £5 selected seats.

SUMMARY:Forward with Banners – 140 years of Mothers’ Union
DESCRIPTION:This year Mothers’ Union celebrates 140 years of faithful Christian outreach to families of all faiths and none. Since 1876\, when Mary Sumner first brought together parents in her own parish to build confidence in bringing up their children in the Christian faith\, we have grown to an organisation of over four million women and men in over 80 countries of the world. \nAs part of our celebrations in this diocese\, Mothers’ Union are bringing together branch processional banners from right across the county\, for an exhibition in the Cathedral.  Many of the banners have been made by past members\, showing a high quality of needlework\, and have been proudly displayed in parish churches throughout the years\, while members serve the local and wider communities\, making a real difference to people lives. \nOur vision is of a world where God’s love is shown through loving\, respectful and flourishing relationships. This is not a vague hope\, but a goal we actively pursue by praying\, campaigning and enabling. During 2016 over 500\,000 people will benefit from Mothers’ Union’s support for family life. Many will know the support of our membership through outreach projects in their local communities. \nMothers’ Union in the Truro Diocese are involved in projects throughout the diocese and support programmes across the world. The “Away From It All” holiday scheme gives families experiencing stressful situations a well-earned break. We work in partnership with “Action for Children” providing practical support for Young Carers and through the Teddy Horsley scheme\, children in Church of England Primary School Reception Class are given a knitted bear and a book\, these simple stories offer an introduction to spiritual matters.  Through the national Bye Buy Childhood campaign\, launched to raise awareness of increasing marketing and sexualisation of children\, Mothers’ Union has brought about change in both industry and government. \nWe also support communities worldwide\, creating change and transforming lives\, through the Literacy and Education Programme\, the Church & Community Mobilisation Process and many other initiatives. \nThe banners are a wonderful reminder of our past and present\, and allow us to reflect on how the organisation has grown. Now\, as we go forward\, there has never been a more challenging or exciting time to be part of Mothers’ Union. \nThe Forward with Banners Exhibition is in Truro Cathedral from 2-16 September\, Mon – Sat 10-5pm and Sundays 12-4pm and is Free \nThe poster can be found here.

SUMMARY:Canon Sings St Mark's Gospel
DESCRIPTION:Canon Alan Rowell has found a particular ministry in singing\, from memory\, his own translation of St Mark’s Gospel. \nThe performance takes just under two hours\, including a tea-break half-way through.  There are obvious advantages for Christians in hearing the whole Gospel story in one go.  It has also roused interest in those who normally give little thought to the Christian Faith. \nAlan has performed in churches\, homes\, and several times out-doors!  He prefers smallish numbers\, being easier to relate to all present.\nHis next performance is in Truro Cathedral 6pm Sunday 6th March. Alan can also be contacted at canonrowell@outlook.com\, or 075 999 471 08.
