SUMMARY:CMED Course - Leading from the second chair
DESCRIPTION:with Revd Charles Burgess \nSome people will always be second chair leaders – those who serve with others in overall leadership. Others will be passing through to becoming the incumbent or some other first chair leader. Many in overall leadership will have those who lead with them. This day identifies some of the common issues for those in the second chair\, explores how to work with those tensions but also realise the benefits\, and offers a forum to share concerns and struggles. \nCharles is a leadership specialist with CPAS. He has many years of practical leadership experience both from a career in the RAF and\, in the last seven years\, through his role with CPAS. CPAS currently work with over 20 dioceses in supporting them as they seek to build and strengthen a culture of collaborative leadership\, including developing and enabling vision\, changing culture\, building teams and developing missional leadership. To this end\, Charles facilitates various leadership development events across the UK\, from individual days to longer-term programmes. He also mentors clergy in developing their leadership development skills. \nNote: This event is a joint CMED/IME Phase 2 (curates) session. \n10am Coffee\, 10.30am Start\, 4pm Finish \nClick here to book a place.

SUMMARY:CMED Course - Shaping Culture
DESCRIPTION:with Revd Charles Burgess \nMany in church leadership know that shaping culture is what is required in their context\, but shaping culture is perhaps the most difficult leadership challenge. How do you shape culture but not trash the past? How do you shape culture and not impose personal preferences? How do you change culture and ensure it is lasting and not just until you leave? Combining a strong model for shaping culture with practical tools\, this day explores the questions: \n\nWhat is culture and how is it related to vision?\nWhat sort of culture do you currently have?\nHow can you bring about culture change?\n\nCharles is a leadership specialist with CPAS. SUMMARY:CMED Course - Dealing with conflicts in the church
DESCRIPTION:with Revd Canon Keith Lamdin \nPeople say that the church is conflict averse and clergy report that conflicts in church life cause them sleepless stress. \nThis day will explore: \n\nthe kinds of conflicts that emerge in church life\,\nwhy they take up so much energy; and\nstrategies for using conflicts to bring about change and creativity.\n\nThe Revd Canon Keith Lamdin was for 25 years the director of the Board for Stewardship\, Training\, Evangelism and Ministry in the diocese of Oxford\, where he managed a team of 14 trainers and consultants. He led the development of a competency-based modular programme\, validated by Oxford Brookes University\, at undergraduate and post graduate levels. He taught on the Master’s leadership modules. \n Keith then became Principal of Sarum College in Salisbury where he not only exercised a leadership role himself but also specialised in the professional development of clergy\, working as a consultant to senior clergy as well as to senior managers in the field of health care\, education and the voluntary sector. He has launched the MA programme in Christian approaches to Leadership and has been pioneering a programme for women leaders in the church. Keith has recently retired from his post of principal at Sarum and is now spending time helping clergy think about their leadership. \n Keith co-authored a book on supervision skills for those who work with the newly ordained\, and in 2012 SPCK published his latest book Finding Your Leadership Style. \nNote: This event is a joint CMED/IME Phase 2 (curates) session. \n10am Coffee\, 10.30am Start\, 3.30pm Finish \nClick here to book a place.

SUMMARY:CMED Course- Moving On
DESCRIPTION:with Revd John Fisher \nThis day will offer insight into the tricky subject of moving jobs. It will provide some biblical framework to the discernment process and how to make good choices. It will also look at the practicalities of making good applications and handling interviews well. ‘Moving On’ will give Godly space to think about this important subject. \nRevd John Fisher was appointed in 2011 as the CPAS (Church Pastoral Aid Society) patronage secretary.   As well as being an Anglican mission agency\, CPAS is the UK’s leading evangelical patron\, with involvement in appointing new clergy to over 500 parishes. CPAS patronage churches stretch from St Silas in Glasgow to Landewednack in Cornwall\, and include several well known churches such as St Holy Trinity Brompton\, home of the Alpha course. \nJohn served in parish ministry for 15 years following his ordination at Wycliffe Hall. He also has experience as an area dean and UCCF (Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship) travelling secretary. Prior to his appointment as CPAS Patronage Secretary John’s  role was with the Society as a leadership development adviser\, where he was involved in training and supporting clergy\, and helping local churches to be more effective in mission. \nNote: This event is a joint CMED/IME 4-7 (curates) session and is intended for clergy. \n10am Coffee\, 10.30am Start\, 4pm Finish. \nClick here to book a place.

SUMMARY:CMED Course- Working With And In Teams
DESCRIPTION:with Revd Canon Keith Lamdin \nEmerging themes of ministry and leadership in parishes these days always put teamwork at the centre.  Sometimes this is thought of as teams of priests working together\, stipendiary and self supporting\, of clergy and licensed lay ministers\, or clergy and elected wardens and members of PCCs\, and sometimes to include all those in the parish who exercise leadership – lay visitors\, house group leaders\, youth and children’s leaders. \nThis day will explore: \n\na model of team work promoted by Patrick Lencioni\, known as the 5 dysfunctions of a team\, including a film of a talk he gave several years ago to a church audience.\nA theology of collaboration\, suggested by people such as Robin Greenwood and Stephen Pickard.\nThe range of skills that are needed in every team to ensure that it actually produces something.  These are ideas developed by Belbin\n\nThe Revd Canon Keith Lamdin was for 25 years the director of the Board for Stewardship\, Training\, Evangelism and Ministry in the diocese of Oxford\, where he managed a team of 14 trainers and consultants. He led the development of a competency-based modular programme\, validated by Oxford Brookes University\, at undergraduate and post graduate levels. He has launched the MA programme in Christian approaches to Leadership and has been pioneering a programme for women leaders in the church. He has recently been commissioned to develop with Waverly Consultancy\, a leadership programme for the House of Bishops. He also teaches on a senior leader programme on the Unconscious in Organisations for the Institute of Advanced Learning at Oxford University\, and for the King’s Fund programme for senior Managers. He has shared in consultations and conferences in South Africa\, Canada and the U.S. \n Keith works with a systems approach to his work\, enriched over the years by his association with the Grubb Institute having worked as a consultant member of staff on their international Group Relations Conferences. For a number of years he taught on the psychodynamic Counselling Course validated by Oxford Brookes and sponsored by Counselling\, Consultancy Oxfordshire (CCO). \n Recently he has co-authored a book on supervision skills for those who work with the newly ordained\, and in 2012 SPCK published his latest book Finding Your Leadership Style.  \n10am Coffee\, 10.30am Start\, 4pm Finish. \nClick here to book a place.

SUMMARY:CMED Course- Why Has The Church Got This 'Thing' About Sex?
DESCRIPTION:with Revd Dr John Harrod \nIn the 1970s in particular it was common for Christians to feel a sense of unease  over  how badly the church has handled the subject of  sexuality. The ‘liberation’ of the 1970s needed to happen. But forty years later all is not well. \nArguably our modern society treats sexuality just as badly as has the church in the past – but in different ways\,  and bringing its own brand of misery. \nPerhaps there are insights in the Christian tradition we need to recover\, and yet are we prevented from doing this because the church still seems to have ‘a thing’ about sex? \nMoreover\,  there remain deep disagreements within the church – some of which are in danger of damaging  the church’s credibility. \nCome to the study day to share in a conversation about these issues – facilitated by input from the leader. \nRevd Dr John Harrod is a retired Methodist Minister and former Principal of Hartley Victoria Methodist College. \n10am Coffee\, 10.30am Start\, 4pm Finish. \nClick here to book a place. \n
