SUMMARY:In the Fullness of Time - A Story from the Past and Future of the Church
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to welcome Revd Paul Bradbury to Truro to hear about his new book In the Fullness of Time. \nWeaving together parable\, storytelling\, travelogue history and poetry\, Paul journeys from rural Norfolk to inner-city London\, from a radical missional community in Lincolnshire\, to a traditional village parish in Dorset\, to explore what the church looks like today\, and how local parish communities are wrestling with the tensions between the value of inherited church\, and the need to look to the future.

SUMMARY:Six Hours with Twelve Prophets
DESCRIPTION:At the end of the (English) Old Testament are twelve prophetic books\, commonly called “The Minor Prophets”\, mainly because they are shorter in length than the “major” prophets. Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address is 272 words and lasted two minutes; but it is doubtful whether many people remember a word from Edward Everett’s two-hour speech which preceded it. \nIn this workshop/retreat we will “helicopter” over these twelve books (were they ever intended as one book?)\, observing their main themes and reflecting on their relevance for our lives and work today. \nRev Howard Peskett was Senior Hebrew Scholar of Cambridge University. He is a Cornish bard and the Coordinator of the Cornish Bible Project. He has been a teacher in Singapore\, Bristol and Rural Dean in Penwith. He has spent a lifetime encouraging believers that they can discover for themselves the meaning and wonder of the Bible as they seek to love and follow Christ.

SUMMARY:Three mornings with St Paul: 3. Christian community\, then and now
DESCRIPTION:Paul’s letters to different communities of believers are the earliest surviving Christian writings. He is our founding theologian\, but he is a contentious figure even among faithful readers of the New Testament. Other people who know very little about the letters can also have strong opinions about what they think Paul wrote! \nHe writes to believers in the now distant culture of the first century\, Jewish and Hellenistic. However\, his core theological beliefs are now ours: ‘We preach Christ crucified’; ‘Jesus is Lord’. They were forged from the cross of Christ\, from God’s promises in the Hebrew Bible\, from those who were in Christ before him and from his own experience. In the letters\, he relates this theological core to the issues that the early congregations wrestle with: behaviour in community\, in personal relationships\, in leadership and ministries. There are ways to explore how this informs us in applying the theology to ourselves and our communities. \nThese three mornings are designed as a whole\, so we hope you can come to all three. If you can come only to one or two\, you will still be very welcome. (If you can only join on the second or third morning without having been able to come to previous ones\, Robert will try to summarise the earlier sessions…) People booking themselves in for any morning will be sent suggestions of which letters to read as preparation for that session. \nThe Revd Robert Evans has degrees from Oxford\, Cambridge and London\, and is recently retired from an academic career in New Testament theology and biblical interpretation. One of his books that is relevant (not required) for these sessions is Judge for Yourselves: reading 1 Corinthians (Darton Longman and Todd\, 2003). He comes from St Ives\, was a curate (early 1980s) in Wadebridge and St Columb Minor\, and now lives in Coverack. \nThis is session three.\nSession one takes place on 22 February.\nSession two takes place on 21 March.

SUMMARY:Trusting God in Troubled Times
DESCRIPTION:Isaiah is the fifth longest book in the Old Testament and the second most-quoted OT book in the New Testament. There are a few “purple passages” which many people know\, often read at Christmas time. But how is the book arranged and what are its main themes? \nDuring this session you will study the ten chapters of this book\, which is overwhelmingly a BOOK OF FAITH. \nWhat does it mean to trust God in troubled times – then…. and now? \nRev Howard Peskett was Senior Hebrew Scholar of Cambridge University. He is a Cornish bard and the Coordinator of the Cornish Bible Project. He has been a teacher in Singapore\, Bristol and Rural Dean in Penwith. SUMMARY:Journeying through Turbulent Times with Margaret Silf
DESCRIPTION:We are living through turbulent times. The turmoil reveals itself at all levels: global\, national and personal. How can we journey creatively through such times using a spiritual compass\, and how might we accompany others on this stormy trail? \nDuring this day of reflection we will explore some spiritual tools for navigating turmoil in our individual and our collective journeys without succumbing to cynicism or despair\, and to be alongside others in times of both personal and global upheaval. \nFurther information can be found here.

SUMMARY:Windows into Anglicanism
DESCRIPTION:‘Windows into Anglicanism’ may\, on first viewing as a title\, suggest that what is on offer is something in house for those who are ‘Church of England’ through and through. The course however will encompass anything from the history that saw the Church of England come into existence\, to the worldwide influence it came to have through the Anglican Communion\, dealing on the way with its doctrinal foundations and ending with some of the dilemmas it faces in the world as we find it today. I hope then that it will have some appeal for everyone\, for those who claim Anglicanism as their particular expression of the way or those who would simply consider it a cultural icon of our nation and even those who would simply define it as the Church they don’t go to. \nThe course is newly written and this is its first outing beginning on Monday\, November 7th in the Pearson Room of the Cathedral Office and people can take part in any of the three sessions 10am-12noon\, 2pm -4pm and 7.30pm-9.30pm by the author Revd Canon Dr David Miller\, Vicar of Helston and Wendron and Revd Canon Alan Bashforth – Canon Chancellor of the Cathedral. \nThe course runs for six weeks and concludes on Monday 12th December and the cost of the course is £10. There is no requirement to pre-register just arrive on the day. \nClick here for the poster.
