SUMMARY:CMED Course- Sustaining Oneself In Leadership Day Two- Personal Orderliness\, Handling The Admin Avalanche
DESCRIPTION:with Revd Charles Burgess \n All leadership is demanding and burnout is familiar to those exercising leadership in all sorts of contexts. This a two day event which looks at staying fresh and faithful in our leadership roles based on a model for handling pressure\, whilst exploring what drains and sustains us. The event will include exploring issues of call\, expectations and discerning priorities. While clearly\, participants will gain most value from attending both days\, they are designed so that participants may attend either day one or day two only. \nThe second day will identify\, and look at ways to address those  expectations we place on ourselves as well as those others have of us. It will also identify some of the tough realities of leadership and explore the role played  by spiritual disciplines\, lifestyles and friendships\, in building resilience. \nCharles is a leadership specialist with CPAS. He has many years of practical leadership experience both from a career in the RAF and\, in the last six years\, through his role with CPAS. CPAS currently work with over 20 dioceses in supporting them as they seek to build and strengthen a culture of collaborative leadership\, including developing and enabling vision\, changing culture\, building teams and developing missional leadership. To this end\, Charles facilitates various leadership development events across the UK\, from individual days to longer-term programmes. He also mentors clergy in developing their leadership development skills. \nNote: This event is a joint CMED/IME Phase 2 (curates) session\, members of IME Phase 2 are expected to attend both days on 2nd and 3rd December. \n10am Coffee\, 10.30am Start\, 4pm Finish. \nClick here to book a place. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:with Revd Charles Burgess \n All leadership is demanding and burnout is familiar to those exercising leadership in all sorts of contexts. The event will include exploring issues of call\, expectations and discerning priorities. While clearly\, participants will gain most value from attending both days\, they are designed so that participants may attend either day one or day two only. \n The first day will think about issues of character\, call and discerning priorities\, together with exploring what a rhythm of grace may look like rather than one in which we are driven to ‘to achieve’. \nCharles is a leadership specialist with CPAS. He has many years of practical leadership experience both from a career in the RAF and\, in the last six years\, through his role with CPAS. SUMMARY:CMED Course- Moving On
DESCRIPTION:with Revd John Fisher \nThis day will offer insight into the tricky subject of moving jobs. It will provide some biblical framework to the discernment process and how to make good choices. It will also look at the practicalities of making good applications and handling interviews well. ‘Moving On’ will give Godly space to think about this important subject. \nRevd John Fisher was appointed in 2011 as the CPAS (Church Pastoral Aid Society) patronage secretary.   As well as being an Anglican mission agency\, CPAS is the UK’s leading evangelical patron\, with involvement in appointing new clergy to over 500 parishes. CPAS patronage churches stretch from St Silas in Glasgow to Landewednack in Cornwall\, and include several well known churches such as St Holy Trinity Brompton\, home of the Alpha course. \nJohn served in parish ministry for 15 years following his ordination at Wycliffe Hall. He also has experience as an area dean and UCCF (Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship) travelling secretary. Prior to his appointment as CPAS Patronage Secretary John’s  role was with the Society as a leadership development adviser\, where he was involved in training and supporting clergy\, and helping local churches to be more effective in mission. \nNote: This event is a joint CMED/IME 4-7 (curates) session and is intended for clergy. \n10am Coffee\, 10.30am Start\, 4pm Finish. \nClick here to book a place.

SUMMARY:CMED Course- Dealing With The Basic Issues Of Biblical Scholarship In Today's Church
DESCRIPTION:with Revd Canon Dr Stephen Dawes \nDealing with the basic issues of Biblical scholarship in today’s Church:  All priests\, ministers\, Readers and Local Preachers are trained in what we might call classic Biblical scholarship and have been for over a century.  Yet often when interested lay people are introduced to some of the mildest and most commonplace ideas of classic Biblical scholarship they ask ‘Why have we not heard this before?’  Why indeed.  This session will explore the gap between the classroom and the pulpit and the strange silence of a century of Biblical scholarship in today’s church.  It will work on the assumption that if the Church of England is to be true to Hooker and the Methodist Church to Wesley and Peake\, that dangerous gap must be closed. \n Stephen is a retired Methodist minister and Canon Theologian of Truro Cathedral. \n10am Coffee\, 10.30am Start\, 4pm Finish. \nClick here to book a place.

SUMMARY:CMED Course- Discovering The Big Story Of The Bible And Our Part In It
DESCRIPTION:with Revd Howard Peskett \n“As the rain and snow come down from heaven\, and do not return there but water the earth\, making it bring forth and sprout\, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater\, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty\, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose\, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”  (Isaiah 55.10\,11). \nWhat is this large book which all Christians treasure but so few Christians read?  John Wesley wrote\, “I want to know the way to heaven; God has written it down in a book.  Oh\, give me that book!  At any price give me the book of God!”  George Whitefield found light and life and power from above when he “.. began to read the Holy Scriptures upon my knees\, laying aside all other books and praying over\, if possible\, every line and word.  This proved meat indeed and drink indeed to my soul.”  John Keble wrote of the bible\, “Who that hath felt thy glance of dread/ Thrill through his heart’s remotest cells\,/ About his path\, about his bed\,/ Can doubt what Spirit in thee dwells!” \nOn this study day we will helicopter over the whole terrain of scripture.  We will study the shape of the bible\, especially the Old Testament.  We will study the place of Jesus Christ as the focus of prophetic testimony and apostolic witness.  We will summarise the process by which these 66 books have come to have a unique authority for Protestant Christians (with a brief side-glance to the Apocrypha).  We will discuss how today we can live within the Bible’s great\, continuing story; how we can inhabit this story; how we can perform this drama; how we are ourselves (or not) the greatest translation of scripture as it becomes visible in our lives.  And finally we will choose our own TWELVE WORDS to summarise the great story of the bible\, which we can use as we seek to share the good news (the gospel) with others. \nAugustine said\, “We understand not by active intellect at work on the OBJECT but by contemplative turning\, by love\, desire and delight.”  This is the spirit in which we will approach this day. \nHoward Peskett is a retired priest living in Penzance\, formerly the Dean of the Discipleship Training Centre in Singapore; the Vice Principal of Trinity College Bristol; the Rural Dean of Penwith.  He has spent a lifetime encouraging men and women\, in Asia and in the UK\, to believe that they can themselves discover the meaning and the wonder of the Bible as they seek to love and follow Christ. \n10am Coffee\, 10.30am Start\, 4pm Finish. \nClick here to book a place. \n

SUMMARY:CMED Course- Liturgical Rules\, Why We Need Them
DESCRIPTION:with Revd Lesley Walker \n Writing in the Forward to the book Liturgy\, Order and Law John Hapgood says: \n  “Worship uniquely expresses the mind of the church and encapsulates its doctrine.” \n In reality the doctrine and teaching of the Church of England is enshrined in the Book of Common Prayer\, the 39 Articles of Religion and the Ordinal.  It is for this reason that those who are involved in the planning and leading of worship need to have some understanding of liturgical law. \nThere will always be those who question the need for any rules or control and there will inevitably be parishes where little attention is paid to them.  As the Church of England has developed its new liturgies and has encouraged more informal worship aimed at appealing to the young and the un-churched the need for clear guidelines has become even more important.  There needs to be an increased awareness amongst those responsible for maintaining and ordering the worshipping life of the Church.  In turn as those responsible for planning and leading worship we do need to have an understanding of the legal frameworks we are required to work by\, what they are and why they are there.  This is important not only to safeguard the Church of England but also to protect worshippers from those clergy and parishes who seek to set themselves apart from our common heritage and tradition. \nThe aim of this session is not to be prescriptive but to help us to embrace the worship we hold in common while celebrating the diversity that is possible within today’s Church of England. \n Lesley has been Rector of the Meneage Benefice since 2007.  Her interest in liturgy began as a Curate and has continued throughout her ministry.  She was secretary to Hereford Diocesan Liturgical Committee for 10 years and has been involved in training clergy\, ordinands\, Readers and Lay Worship Leaders in both Hereford and Canterbury. She has recently been involved in the setting up of a Liturgical Committee for this diocese.  \nNote: This event is a joint CMED/IME Phase 2 (curates) session. \n5.45pm Light buffet Refreshments\, 6.30pm Start\, 9pm Finish. \nClick here to book a place. \n

SUMMARY:CMED Course- The History and Practice Of The Celtic Christian Church
DESCRIPTION:with Revd Canon Pat Robson MBE \nSoon after Rome withdrew its troops in 410AD Britain was invaded by large numbers of displaced peoples from Europe.  Many Britons fled ahead of the invasion to hide in the valleys of Wales or to make a new home in NW Gaul. The Brits became a refugee people\, anxious about the safety of their families\, desperate to find land where they could settle in peace and determined to keep their Christian faith alive. Over the next 200 years\, while the British Church was cut off from the mainstream church in Europe\, it developed some unique customs and beliefs that are still held dear by the British people to this day. \nPat  is a retired priest and teacher. \n10am Coffee\, 10.30am Start\, 3.30pm Finish. \nClick here to book a place. \n

SUMMARY:CMED Course- Working With And In Teams
DESCRIPTION:with Revd Canon Keith Lamdin \nEmerging themes of ministry and leadership in parishes these days always put teamwork at the centre.  Sometimes this is thought of as teams of priests working together\, stipendiary and self supporting\, of clergy and licensed lay ministers\, or clergy and elected wardens and members of PCCs\, and sometimes to include all those in the parish who exercise leadership – lay visitors\, house group leaders\, youth and children’s leaders. \nThis day will explore: \n\na model of team work promoted by Patrick Lencioni\, known as the 5 dysfunctions of a team\, including a film of a talk he gave several years ago to a church audience.\nA theology of collaboration\, suggested by people such as Robin Greenwood and Stephen Pickard.\nThe range of skills that are needed in every team to ensure that it actually produces something.  These are ideas developed by Belbin\n\nThe Revd Canon Keith Lamdin was for 25 years the director of the Board for Stewardship\, Training\, Evangelism and Ministry in the diocese of Oxford\, where he managed a team of 14 trainers and consultants. He led the development of a competency-based modular programme\, validated by Oxford Brookes University\, at undergraduate and post graduate levels. He taught on the Master’s leadership modules. \n Now as the Principal of Sarum College in Salisbury he not only exercises a leadership role himself but also specialises in the professional development of clergy\, working as a consultant to senior clergy as well as to senior managers in the field of health care\, education and the voluntary sector. He has launched the MA programme in Christian approaches to Leadership and has been pioneering a programme for women leaders in the church. He has recently been commissioned to develop with Waverly Consultancy\, a leadership programme for the House of Bishops. He also teaches on a senior leader programme on the Unconscious in Organisations for the Institute of Advanced Learning at Oxford University\, and for the King’s Fund programme for senior Managers. He has shared in consultations and conferences in South Africa\, Canada and the U.S. \n Keith works with a systems approach to his work\, enriched over the years by his association with the Grubb Institute having worked as a consultant member of staff on their international Group Relations Conferences. For a number of years he taught on the psychodynamic Counselling Course validated by Oxford Brookes and sponsored by Counselling\, Consultancy Oxfordshire (CCO). \n Recently he has co-authored a book on supervision skills for those who work with the newly ordained\, and in 2012 SPCK published his latest book Finding Your Leadership Style.  \n10am Coffee\, 10.30am Start\, 4pm Finish. \nClick here to book a place.

SUMMARY:CMED Course- Hearing God's Voice Through Selected Psalms
DESCRIPTION:with Revd Howard Peskett \n “Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a lamp to my path.” \n A missionary friend in North Thailand\, sensing a great darkness\, felt the Lord give her Psalm 62.  The next day she found her husband’s body and that of a friend on a lonely mountain track.  The psalms are the church’s oldest hymn book.  They have shone in dark ages\, times of reformation\, times of revival.  They have strengthened housewives\, soldiers\, the sick\, sailors\, scholars\, the housebound\, poets\, writers.  Psalm 83 was read in the Czech parliament in August 1968 as Russian tanks rumbled through the streets.  Psalm 27.1 is the motto of Oxford University.  Psalm 127.1 is engraved on the foundation of the Eddystone Lighthouse.  Bishop Ridley read Psalm 4.8 and slept well the night before he was burned.  On 28th October 1885 Bishop Hannington\, one of the first missionaries in Uganda\, wrote in his diary\, “I am quite broken down and brought low.  Comforted by Psalm 27.”  The next day he was hacked to pieces by the king’s soldiers. There are hundreds of other examples in Lord Ernle’s book\, The Psalms in Human Life\, published in 1909. \nThe habit of reading or singing the psalms in church has declined.  If we attended the principal Sunday service every Sunday for three years\, and read the psalm prescribed for that service from the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL)\, at the end of those 153 Sundays we would only have read 47 complete psalms; parts of 41 other psalms; and 62 psalms would have been entirely omitted. \nUnlike most song books\, the Psalms contain songs for every mood.  They are the heritage of the universal church\, our birthright.  On this study day\, we will: \n\nsurvey the whole book\, to feel its shape and texture;\ndig into five psalms\, all ones unused by the RCL: a praise psalm; a lament; a dark psalm; a cry for justice and a Messianic psalm;\nsing some psalm songs in various styles\, location permitting;\nlisten for and to the voice of God through these songs\, deepening our understanding of these songs as revelation from God through human experience.\n\nHoward Peskett is a retired priest living in Penzance\, formerly the Dean of the Discipleship Training Centre in Singapore; the Vice Principal of Trinity College Bristol; the Rural Dean of Penwith. \n

SUMMARY:CMED Course- Why Has The Church Got This 'Thing' About Sex?
DESCRIPTION:with Revd Dr John Harrod \nIn the 1970s in particular it was common for Christians to feel a sense of unease  over  how badly the church has handled the subject of  sexuality. The ‘liberation’ of the 1970s needed to happen. But forty years later all is not well. \nArguably our modern society treats sexuality just as badly as has the church in the past – but in different ways\,  and bringing its own brand of misery. \nPerhaps there are insights in the Christian tradition we need to recover\, and yet are we prevented from doing this because the church still seems to have ‘a thing’ about sex? \nMoreover\,  there remain deep disagreements within the church – some of which are in danger of damaging  the church’s credibility. \nCome to the study day to share in a conversation about these issues – facilitated by input from the leader. \nRevd Dr John Harrod is a retired Methodist Minister and former Principal of Hartley Victoria Methodist College. \n10am Coffee\, 10.30am Start\, 4pm Finish. \nClick here to book a place. \n

SUMMARY:CMED Course- Engaging Generation Y
DESCRIPTION:with Revd Charles Burgess \nChristian leadership is best exercised in community. It isn’t a solo venture\, but involves leading well with others and this includes leading across generations. Gen Y (those born between 1980-2000) are among us. They are different\, and many churches are finding that they don’t seem to lead in the same ways as other generations. This day explains the differences between the generations (Gen Y\, Gen X\, Boomers\, Trads)\, and explores how to attract\, engage and motivate Gen Y in leadership\, for example paid staff such as younger youth workers or curates\, as well as volunteers. \n10am Coffee 10.30am Start 3.30pm Finish \nClick here to book a place.

SUMMARY:CMED Training Day- 'Atonement Theories- And Why We Don't Need Them?'
DESCRIPTION:‘Atonement Theories- And Why We Don’t Need Them?’\nwith Revd Canon Dr Stephen Dawes\nThe Big Question the first Christians faced was ‘Why did Jesus the Messiah die?’ because dying was not in the official script.  So they ransacked their theological resources for explanations and came up with a rich variety of ideas\, metaphors\, explanations\, illustrations and parables. In this Study Day we will look at that process\, explore and critique a variety of Atonement Theories\, and ask if some of them haven’t seriously and catastrophically missed the Biblical point.
