SUMMARY:On the Trail of St Sampson
DESCRIPTION:On the Trail of St Sampson \nWhat is it that makes Cornwall a place rich in Celtic saints?  At St Sampson’s South Hill\, a place seemingly hidden away in East Cornwall\, we have an amazing faith and heritage story to tell\, starting with St Sampson and continuing to this day. \nAnne Hayward will be giving a talk at St Sampson’s South Hill on Tuesday 5th April 7pm. \nOn the Trail of St Sampson (Free\, donations welcome) | Facebook \nAnne will be telling us about early Celtic saints and their journeys and the incredible impact this age of the saints still has on us.  We all know about The Saint’s Way from Padstow to Fowey\, but there are other less well known and trod routes. Perhaps we can create local pilgrimage routes to inspire a new generation of pilgrims? \nThe focus of the talk will be especially on St Sampson and his life and travels.  Sampson has the distinction of being the only ‘Cornish’ saint whose ‘Life’\, or biography as we would call it today\, was written less than two hundred years after his death.  We know he started life in Wales and died in France\, but the Cornish bit in between is full of excitement; Killing giant serpents\, being asked to leave a monastery for being too good and restoring a man back to life. \nAt the heart of the Christianity of Celtic people like St Sampson\, was a profound faith and a sense of calling to discipleship.  They went out into the world sowing the seeds of God’s kingdom.  They travelled long distances\, engaged with people in the local communities they visited and told them the good news about Jesus Christ.  Sampson really seems to have existed and to have been a pilgrim and a true disciple.  We can imagine a simply dressed man\, with sandals on his feet\, carrying nothing more than a cloth bag for his belongings.  Someone like that must have come to the area we now call South Hill and spread the word of God.  We like to believe St Sampson built his monastery at South Hill\, evidence points towards this\, but we cannot prove it!    I believe that person was probably Sampson and I thank God for his faithful obedience. \nAnne has undertaken many personal pilgrimages and it will be a delight to hear about her experiences as a pilgrim and church visitor\, as she tells us what makes a good church welcome.   Her book ‘A Celtic Pilgrimage’\, which has a forward by the Rt Revd Philip Mounstephen Bishop of Truro\, gives some history of the ancient Celtic places visited and recalls conversations with those she met as a modern-day pilgrim.   It is a fascinating read. \nA warm welcome awaits.

SUMMARY:The Bereavement Journey
DESCRIPTION:Bereavement can impact hugely and affect all areas of life. Developed at Holy Trinity Brompton and appreciated by thousands of people over 20 years\, The Bereavement Journey is for anyone who has been bereaved at any time and in any way. By means of a series of films and discussion groups it gently guides bereaved people through the most common aspects of grief\, enabling them to process the implications for themselves and discern next steps. \nThe course offers 5 x weekly sessions for bereaved adults with an optional 6th session. The first 5 sessions look at commonly experienced aspects of bereavement via DVDs and discussion. The hope is that the course will enable attendees to take some steps towards processing their grief and begin to envisage a positive\, albeit different\, future. Apart from a short closing prayer\, there is no specifically Christian content/discussion in these sessions. The 6th session\, which is entirely optional\, looks at the Christian view of death\, healing and the afterlife. As this final session is optional\, The Bereavement Journey is suitable for people of any faith or none. \nSessions will be on consecutive Tuesdays\, 7-9pm (although we encourage arrival any time after 6.30 pm to chat) starting on Tuesday 26th April. Anybody needing more information should initially contact: nikki@smartchurchliskeard.co.uk or you can register your interest here: https://smartchurchliskeard.churchsuite.com/events/pakpfaur

SUMMARY:An amazing exhibition - Tree of Life and Open Heaven
DESCRIPTION:An amazing exhibition of textiles and embroidery normally only seen in cathedrals due to its size is on display in St Martin’s Church\, Liskeard. This is it s first visit to Cornwall. \nThe artist\, Jacqui Parkinson\, has had her work displayed in most of the cathedrals of England. She designed the glass screen and south door in St.Martin’s. \nTree of Life consists of three huge stitched silk panels on a subject that runs though the bible. It took eighteen months and a million stitches!  Visitors find it moving and uplifting – and there’s lots to interest children too. \nTree of Life with Open Heaven are on show from 28th April to 7th June\, open during the week from 9 to 12 on Tuesdays\, Wednesdays\, and Thursdays. Special group visits can be arranged through the Church Office 01579 347411. \nPlease view flyer for further information:  Amazing exhibition at St Martins

SUMMARY:Zero Carbon Britain - Two day training course
DESCRIPTION:Tackling climate change is essential to the life of faith. It is a way to love our neighbour and to care for the gift of creation. In 2020\, recognising that the global climate emergency is a crisis for God’s creation\, and a fundamental injustice\, the General Synod of the Church of England set a bold target of reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2030. We hope this course will inspire and equip you to act to reach this target. \nFor more information please view flyer:C of E ZCB course
