SUMMARY:Cornwall Community Flood Forum Annual Conference
DESCRIPTION:Cornwall Community Flood Forum will be holding its popular annual conference this year on Friday\, November 2. Once again we’ve secured an engaging line-up of national and local thinkers currently working at the heart of community resilience and climate change. \nThis year’s overarching theme is Natural Capital – that is\, our natural assets including forests\, rivers\, land\, minerals and oceans. We’ll be looking in particular at the elements of natural capital that protect our homes\, livelihoods and wildlife from hazards such as flooding. We will also hear about the outlook for flooding over the next ten years from partner organisations. \nOf course we’ll also be focussed on community resilience in Cornwall as we prepare for winter.  There’ll be reflections from Cornwall Council\, the Environment Agency and the National Flood Forum.  We’ll also be announcing new hands-on support from CCFF to help Cornish communities put together flood plans and volunteer groups and we’ll hear about the recent experiences of Portreath Flood Group.  We’ll be launching a new easy-to-use website with all the resources a new flood group needs to get started. \nThe current list of confirmed speakers includes George Eustice (Minister for Agriculture\, Fisheries and Food)\, John Pegg (National Flood Forum)\, Mark Summers (Cornwall Catchment Partnership)\, Dave Watkins (Cornwall Council)\, Janet Lockyer (CCFF)\, Arthur Roberts (Cornwall Council)\, Joyce Duffin (Portreath Flood Group) and Philip Rees (South West Regional Flood and Coastal Committee). \nDue to the popularity of this free event\, we’re moving this year to a larger venue – Truro Methodist Church in Union Place – but places will still be limited so please put the date in your diary and reserve your place now by clicking on the link: \nhttps://ccff1.typeform.com/to/WfQTHc \nOr by emailing or calling: \nCathryn Marcus\, Flood Resilience Manager\, Cornwall Community Flood Forum \ncathryn.marcus@cornwallrcc.org.uk \n01579 383218 / 07775 194030

SUMMARY:St Wenn Remembers
DESCRIPTION:‘As we are in the month of Remembrance\, we must be mindful of the significance this year has in marking the Centenary of the Armistice.  News articles and photographs now dominate our television screens and we hear about film archives from battle lines and trenches and the work recently undertaken by the Director\, Sir Peter Jackson\, to introduce sound and colour to these clips.   Or the Artist\, Rob Heard\, making 19\,240 individual miniature statues to depict those who lost their lives in the bloodiest loss of life in the Battle of the Somme on July 01\, 1916.  Of the 100\,000 British troops who attacked enemy lines\, almost a fifth of them were killed and more than 40\,000 injured. \nThese articles and stories empower us to reflect and remember those lost and those who returned from The Great War.  It may make us think about our own ancestors and research their involvement\, or it may encourage us to participate in some form of ‘Remembrance. \nSt Wenn Remembers enables you to do just that!  Running from Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th November\, the programme of events include opportunities to learn about the lads from St Wenn who served\, died and returned from The Great War – 1914-1918.  The Flower Festival depicts the aspects of WW1 – home life\, the frontline\, medicine\, the cavalry\, to name but a few.  With a pub night\, Blighty Breakfast\, Cinema Night\, two concerts and a Remembrance Service\, this promises to be an event that will bring people together\, commemorate and give thanks for their freedoms and liberties.‘ \nThursday 8th November 2018 – From 6:30pm in the church\, Ben Warwick and some singing colleagues professionally perform a programme of songs\, including a collection from the St Ween school choir. A cash bar is available and entry is £3 per adult on the door. Open from 10:30am-4:30pm. Entry is £2.50 per person\, £1 per programme. Cream teas and a soup lunch available in the hall from 10:30am-4:30pm. \nPub night by the St Wenn Parish Society from 6:30pm until 11:00pm. Entering a WW1 bunker with music from the era… there may be a sing along around the piano! If you feel like dressing up then please feel free but it isn’t obligatory. \nSaturday 10th November 2018  – The flower festival and exhibition continues in the church – open from 10:30am-4:30pm.
