SUMMARY:'One World Week’ at the Cathedral
DESCRIPTION:Each year Truro Cathedral takes part in ‘One World Week’ which marks United Nations Day on 24th October. \nEach year One World Week is celebrated in the Cathedral with a number of separate but linked events all focusing around a particular theme. This year’s theme is ‘Including You’ and particularly as it relates to migration. \nRobin and Mard Sellwood are members of the Cathedral congregation and they said\, “One World Week is an annual opportunity for people to come together from diverse backgrounds and learn a little bit about other people’s lives\, building relationships and mutual respect along the way. Its aim is to draw attention to the fact that the world consists of one human race which shares one planet. This year we are hoping to show how local organisations are helping to relieve the Refugee crisis”. \nRowley Surridge has just returned from a trip to the Calais refugee camp and said\, “The refugee crisis is not about to go away. Those soon to be moved from the Jungle (Calais camp) by the French authorities to other camps will not change the situation only relocate it. The fact that there are refuges in often squalid conditions shows that as yet there is not the political will to care for these people in a manner that befits a western developed country such as ours or many in the EU”. \nSome of the events going on at the Cathedral during One World Week include: \nThe One World Week Exhibition which starts on Sunday 23rd October (running through until 30th) which features a number of local\, national and international organisations including The Eden Project\, Shelterbox\, Mid Cornwall United Nations Association and All Saints\, Highertown. The exhibition runs for a week and is free and features the work and projects of these organisations. \nThis year the special Evensong to mark United Nations Day will take place in the cathedral on Sunday 23rd October at 4pm and will be sung by St Mary’s Singers. \nFor more information visit the cathedral website www.trurocathedral.org.uk

SUMMARY:Windows into Anglicanism
DESCRIPTION:‘Windows into Anglicanism’ may\, on first viewing as a title\, suggest that what is on offer is something in house for those who are ‘Church of England’ through and through. The course however will encompass anything from the history that saw the Church of England come into existence\, to the worldwide influence it came to have through the Anglican Communion\, dealing on the way with its doctrinal foundations and ending with some of the dilemmas it faces in the world as we find it today. I hope then that it will have some appeal for everyone\, for those who claim Anglicanism as their particular expression of the way or those who would simply consider it a cultural icon of our nation and even those who would simply define it as the Church they don’t go to. \nThe course is newly written and this is its first outing beginning on Monday\, November 7th in the Pearson Room of the Cathedral Office and people can take part in any of the three sessions 10am-12noon\, 2pm -4pm and 7.30pm-9.30pm by the author Revd Canon Dr David Miller\, Vicar of Helston and Wendron and Revd Canon Alan Bashforth – Canon Chancellor of the Cathedral. \nThe course runs for six weeks and concludes on Monday 12th December and the cost of the course is £10. There is no requirement to pre-register just arrive on the day. \nClick here for the poster.

SUMMARY:CMED Course - A Day on Diversity- How Welcoming Can We Be?
DESCRIPTION:Led by members of the Diversity Network for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly\, this day long workshop offers an opportunity to hear from people from the diverse communities of Cornwall. SUMMARY:‘Be a Chorister for a Day’ event
DESCRIPTION:Truro Cathedral and Truro School to host ‘Be a Chorister for a Day’ event \nOn Tuesday 15 November\, Truro Cathedral and Truro School will be hosting a ‘Be a Chorister for A Day’ event. \nThe day will give girls the chance to experience life as a Chorister\, from morning rehearsal through to school lessons\, finishing with a short service of Evensong\, where they will have the chance to sing with Truro Cathedral Choir. \nRecruitment for girl Choristers at Truro Cathedral starts from the age of 13\, so the event is open to girls who are currently in Year 7 or 8. \nDirector of Music at Truro Cathedral\, Christopher Gray\, says: “Being a Chorister can be a truly life-changing and life-enhancing experience for the right girl. Aside from the benefits of singing at the highest level almost every day\, the girls perform with leading national groups such as the City of London Sinfonia and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales; they will record their first CD this year; and as we recently announced\, they will be working with renowned composer\, Dobrinka Tabakova\, who will be writing music specially for them. All of this is on top of their regular routine singing live to tens of thousands of people every year at Truro Cathedral as part of its celebrated choir.” \nTruro Cathedral Choir is directed by specialist\, professional musicians and gives the girls the chance to perform in one of the finest buildings in the South West. The choir has built up an outstanding reputation\, taking part in live broadcasts for television and radio and joining in foreign tours. \nHeadmaster of Truro School\, Andrew Gordon-Brown\, says: “I cannot overstate how impressed I have been with our chorister programme which is now in its second year of operation. Singing with the nationally renowned Truro Cathedral Choir\, the girls have gone from strength to strength and are already achieving great things. This is indeed a unique opportunity for these girls to develop as individuals and make the most of their musical talent.” \nGirls who join the choir are welcomed into a supportive environment\, where they develop character and form leadership skills whilst nurturing a high level of chorister training and performance. \nThe cathedral’s girl Choristers are recruited from all across Cornwall and beyond; if successful the girls attend Truro School\, where they receive scholarship and bursary support for their education. \nTo find out more about the day\, visit: www.truroschool.com/be-a-chorister-for-a-day-15-november-2016. Places for the event are free of charge\, please contact Truro School’s Director of Admissions\, Jayne Grigg\, on 01872 272763 or at admissions@truroschool.com to reserve a place.
