SUMMARY:Being a Priest online in 2024
DESCRIPTION:The last ten years has seen a revolution in the way we communicate online\, not least through the impact of the pandemic which thrust us into relying on technology in a new way. This will be a session to explore how social media is today\, what it means to minister using these tools and an opportunity to reflect together theologically on how we use technology for ministry and mission. \nWe’re delighted to welcome the Rev’d Bryony Taylor to lead this session.\nBryony was a social media consultant before being ordained in 2014. She found her online skills coming in handy during the pandemic and produced guides and ran online courses for fellow clergy on how to navigate this brave new world. Bryony contributed a chapter to the Grove Booklet ‘Hybrid Church’ in 2020 and to a collection of articles on church during the pandemic in a book called the Distanced Church edited by Heidi Campbell (2020). She can be found on twitter/X\, Instagram and Threads @vahva.

SUMMARY:Evensong celebration for 30th anniversary of the ordination of women
DESCRIPTION:In March 1994\, the first women were ordained as priests\, some having been ordained as Deacons before this and many ministering as Deaconesses before that. Over the past 30 years\, many women have followed in the footsteps of those who were first ordained. They have led and inspired men and women in their faith and brought vision and wisdom into the church and the varied and diverse communities that they have served in and led. To mark this important moment\, to celebrate the ministry of women past and present to pray for their continued ministries and to look towards a creative future of inclusive ministry\, there will be a service of celebration and thanksgiving in Truro Cathedral.

SUMMARY:Three mornings with St Paul: 1. Transformed by the cross of Christ: Paul and his congregations
DESCRIPTION:Paul’s letters to different communities of believers are the earliest surviving Christian writings. He is our founding theologian\, but he is a contentious figure even among faithful readers of the New Testament. Other people who know very little about the letters can also have strong opinions about what they think Paul wrote! \nHe writes to believers in the now distant culture of the first century\, Jewish and Hellenistic. However\, his core theological beliefs are now ours: ‘We preach Christ crucified’; ‘Jesus is Lord’. They were forged from the cross of Christ\, from God’s promises in the Hebrew Bible\, from those who were in Christ before him and from his own experience. In the letters\, he relates this theological core to the issues that the early congregations wrestle with: behaviour in community\, in personal relationships\, in leadership and ministries. There are ways to explore how this informs us in applying the theology to ourselves and our communities. \nThese three mornings are designed as a whole\, so we hope you can come to all three. If you can come only to one or two\, you will still be very welcome. (If you can only join on the second or third morning without having been able to come to previous ones\, Robert will try to summarise the earlier sessions…) People booking themselves in for any morning will be sent suggestions of which letters to read as preparation for that session. \nRobert Evans has degrees from Oxford\, Cambridge and London\, and is recently retired from an academic career in New Testament theology and biblical interpretation. SUMMARY:The Church of England and the Working Class: historical lessons for today

SUMMARY:Trusting God in Troubled Times
DESCRIPTION:Isaiah is the fifth longest book in the Old Testament and the second most-quoted OT book in the New Testament. There are a few “purple passages” which many people know\, often read at Christmas time. But how is the book arranged and what are its main themes? \nDuring this session you will study the ten chapters of this book\, which is overwhelmingly a BOOK OF FAITH. \nWhat does it mean to trust God in troubled times – then…. and now? \nRev Howard Peskett was Senior Hebrew Scholar of Cambridge University. He is a Cornish bard and the Coordinator of the Cornish Bible Project. He has been a teacher in Singapore\, Bristol and Rural Dean in Penwith. He has spent a lifetime encouraging believers that they can discover for themselves the meaning and wonder of the Bible as they seek to love and follow Christ.

SUMMARY:Journeying on a Leaf: Retreat Day on the Cornish Saint\, St Ia
DESCRIPTION:Retreat Day\, led by Donna Worthington: \nSaint Ia of Cornwall literally missed the boat when her companions left Ireland\, heading for Hayle in Cornwall. Fearing crossing the sea alone\, she prayed and saw a small leaf floating on the water. She watched it and it grew larger and larger. She trusted God\, the leaf became her coracle and carried her across the ocean. \nIa’s story will be the creative ground from which to draw from in order to deepen your own spirituality. Using guided imaginative prayer\, you will explore the journey of surrender\, solitude\, the leafy coracle and the wild elemental ocean\, wind and sky. Her incredible odyssey across the sea will also offer beautiful material for your own creative writing. You’ll be able to explore the idea of ‘journeying with nature’ through contemplation and art; working with an artist\, you will have the opportunity to work with leaves and create patterns in clay – your work will be later fired in a kiln and sent to you as a beautiful reminder of the day and your own creativity. And slowing down and walking mindfully\, you’ll enter a leaf labyrinth\, relaxing into a slow walking prayer on your journey to the Centre\, to God… \nAll are welcome and no writing or art experience is needed. \nTo find out more information please view webpage https://christianretreats.live/online-retreats?start=10

SUMMARY:Three mornings with St Paul: 3. Christian community\, then and now
DESCRIPTION:Paul’s letters to different communities of believers are the earliest surviving Christian writings. \nThe Revd Robert Evans has degrees from Oxford\, Cambridge and London\, and is recently retired from an academic career in New Testament theology and biblical interpretation. One of his books that is relevant (not required) for these sessions is Judge for Yourselves: reading 1 Corinthians (Darton Longman and Todd\, 2003). He comes from St Ives\, was a curate (early 1980s) in Wadebridge and St Columb Minor\, and now lives in Coverack. \nThis is session three.\nSession one takes place on 22 February.\nSession two takes place on 21 March.
