SUMMARY:How can we address religious inequalities in a post-Covid-19 transition?
DESCRIPTION:Despite much of humanity being faced with one of its worst pandemics for over a century\, Covid-19 has not been a great equaliser. SUMMARY:Cuddesdon Summer School in Biblical & Theological Studies
DESCRIPTION:The opening words of Psalm 24 are well known: “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it\,” and yet\, humanity has historically treated the earth as if it was ours and ours alone to do with as we pleased. Christians have\, sadly\, often taken our dominion over the earth and other creatures as permission for exploitation. Both the Bible and the Christian tradition offer us an alternative vision for humanity’s relationship to the rest of creation\, one of care\, responsibility\, and mutual flourishing that shows us that caring for creation is an act of praise honouring to God. \nHumanity is now having an unprecedented impact on the natural world. How we care for our world is becoming an evermore pressing question. This Summer School will explore the themes of creation care found in scripture and tradition\, and look at how a theology of creation care is being put into practice in different contexts. \nWednesday\, July 8 \n10:00 Revd Jen Brown: Welcome and introduction \n10:05 Dr Hywel Clifford: Creation Care in the Old Testament \n11:00 Dr Rebecca Dean: The kingdom of God and the transformation of the wilderness in the Synoptic Gospels \n12:00 Revd Dr Darrell Hannah: The work of Operation Noah\, a Christian charity working with the Church to inspire action on climate change\nPlace: Online on Zoom\nCost: £15 \nThursday\, July 9 \n10:00 Revd Jen Brown: Welcome and introduction \n10:05 Prof. Meric Srokosz: Caring for the Oceans \n11:00 Revd Jen Brown: Loving our neighbours – the inclusion of non-human animals in Creation Care \n12:00 Revd Dr Andrew Gosler: Of Faith and Feathers – or Conservation as a Human Rights Issue \nPlace: Online on Zoom\nCost: £15

SUMMARY:Quiet Day for Clergy
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, July 9: 9.30am – 3.30pm\nled by Revd Jane Horton\n\n“Gathering up the fragments that remain” – Mark 6:30-44 \nThe day will begin and end with a simple act of worship and input will be offered at various points during the morning and afternoon (all via Zoom). There will be plenty of opportunity both to spend time in quiet prayer on your own (perhaps using Ignatian Imaginative Contemplation or Lectio Divina) and to share the fruits of your prayer with others if you wish\, maybe enjoy a prayer walk … Nothing is compulsory! \nIn the midst of all this coronavirus season busyness\, weariness\, ongoing strangeness and discombobulating\, constantly shifting guidelines\, my hope and prayer is that this will be a gentle day to draw breath in God’s presence and be blessed\, refreshed and encouraged. \nPlease email me if you are interested (jane.horton@truro.anglican.org) and I will send you a Zoom invite. \nAlternatively\, if you would prefer to use the material on your own at another time\, then do let me know and I shall email it to you in due course. \nThere is also the potential to run the ‘virtual’ version of this Quiet Day again\, if people would like to share the experience with others\, but cannot make July 9.\n\nNB  Although this is an invitation for clergy in the first instance\, it’s a day that could very easily be run for those in lay leadership if there’s enough interest.

SUMMARY:Clergy Conversations Part 3 - As lockdown eases\, how are we journeying together effectively in a new mixed economy of Church?
DESCRIPTION:“Fruit Salad” or “Fruit Smoothie”? \nAs lockdown eases\, we are starting to speak of offering a mixed (or blended) economy of church. So is it possible to retain the distinct flavours of our traditional churches whilst incorporating the new online offerings that have been flourishing during the past few months (a fruit salad)\, without blending everything so much that is all looks and tastes the same (a fruit smoothie)\, and without burning ourselves out in the process!! We’re delighted to welcome Bishop Hugh to this\, our third ‘Clergy Conversation’ during which we will continue to listen to each other as we share our experiences and ideas\, and continue our journeying together.

SUMMARY:I Packed it Myself – How Churches can engage creatively and positively with overseas workers.
DESCRIPTION:Cornwall has an increasing number of overseas workers who are vital to our economy in many areas such as agriculture\, hospitality and care and health sectors. How can we as a church be aware of the needs of such workers\, accept them as part of our communities and extend a real welcome\, just as if they were from Newcastle or Totnes? \nThis session will offer an opportunity to hear first-hand from people who have had this experience. Their story contains both good and worrying elements. \nTen years ago the Diocese of Truro partnered with Bridging Arts to run a successful project to support churches seeking to respond to migrant workers. We will be looking to see how these and new materials can be used to think through the challenges and opportunities in this area for 2020. Lots of practical tips and resource ideas on offer.

SUMMARY:Covid19 and Children – exploring trauma
DESCRIPTION:This session is particularly aimed at Ministry Teams though open to individuals who might want to attend. \nLed by Kids Matter\, participants will explore the impact Covid19 is having on children’s well-being.  There will be a key focus on how it is impacting vulnerable children and those with adverse childhood experiences. \nParticipants will consider provisions which may be made to support children; whether that setting is in churches\, schools or even individual conversations (perhaps grandparents with grandchildren).

SUMMARY:InHabit : a course in living faithfully through prayer and reflective practice
DESCRIPTION:“The experience of lockdown along with the uncertainty of how Covid will continue to affect our social\, work and church life means that many are finding themselves in a season of change\, transition and questioning of how they might journey as people of faith in these challenging times. InHabit offers a potential way (and community) in which to reflect and discern what might be ‘ours to be and do’ at this particular point in our lives.” \nInHabit is a brand new course written by the Revd Bridget Macaulay of The Vessel Trust and offered in partnership with the Diocese of Truro.  Artist and poet\, as well as priest\, spiritual director and regular retreat and Quiet Day leader\, Bridget has written a number of the Diocese’s Way of Life materials\, including Praying on the Way.  She has also combined faith\, art and poetry in two publications\, Something Understood and Earth and Vessels. \nBridget herself will lead this year-long course (approximately one day per month).  She writes that it will “make use of the physical structure and spiritual rhythm of the monastery as an image and symbol of whole life discipleship and practical prayerfulness. The course aims to build a community of ordinary\, prayerful\, down to earth ‘monastics’! Reflecting personally and together\, we will take stock in the different areas of our often busy and sometimes complex lives. The course aims to build simple habits of prayer and reflection that can find an active outworking in everyday living. By deepening our connection to Christ as the Centre we can respond more deeply to God’s calling to be active contemplatives in a world undergoing enormous change and transition.” \nInHabit will launch online in January 2021 and an online Taster Session and explanation of the course structure will be offered on Thursday 17th Dec 9.30am-12.30pm\, places for which can be booked through:  Jane.Horton@truro.anglican.org \nMore information about the course/costs etc can be found at: http://vesseltrust.org.uk/ and: https://trurodiocese.org.uk/resources/discipleship/  \nEach day-long session will include: \n*Communal prayers at the start and end of the day \n*Teaching input and facilitated discussion \n*Time spent building a practice of contemplative prayer. This half hour of shared silence will not follow a particular technique\, approach or ‘school of prayer’ but where helpful may draw on simple resources to create space in which we remember and settle into God’s Presence. \n*Time alone with resources for personal reflection \n*Time within a small ‘Journey Group’ (maximum three or four people) to discuss\, share\, encourage and apply the learning of the day and the wider journey of faith and life \n*Practical guidance for living out and applying the material explored in the session; often with a suggested ‘practice to practice’ between sessions \n*Take away material to read and further resources on the theme of the day to explore if desired

SUMMARY:Windows Into Eco-Theology
DESCRIPTION:The urgency of the environmental challenges the world faces has come particularly to the forefront of many people’s minds over the course of 2020.  During the pandemic many people have become more deeply aware of their connection with the natural world around them\, others have spent time watching the TV programmes of Sir David Attenborough and others and some have felt drawn\, with Extinction Rebellion and other groups\, to call on governments to do more to protect our vital natural heritage. In the Church also\, efforts to care better for God’s creation have been stepped up this year\, not least through the challenge given to the Church of England by General Synod to aim to be ‘Net Zero’ in our activities by 2030. \nWhat resources do the Bible and Christian theology offer us as we reflect on this topic of ever-pressing urgency to all of us? Windows into Eco-Theology aims to equip us with some of the theological tools to think these issues through for ourselves and for our Christian communities. This is a parish-level theology course\, with no prior knowledge of theology being assumed; as a ‘Windows Plus’ course\, some familiarity with the Bible and basic Christian teaching is helpful\, though not essential. \nThe course will be run over six Monday evenings and will be delivered by the Rev’d Elly Sheard via Zoom.  7.30 to 9.30 pm on January 18 & 25\, February 1\, 8\, 15 and 22. \nTo book a place please book through the Eventbrite platform by clicking the book now button. You can watch a video giving step by step instruction on how to book your tickets\, please see the New Eventbrite booking system news item.
