Diocesan Synod news round up
Stories from Diocesan Synod held on May 30, 2026
Strategic focus unchanged
The diocese’s annual report which was presented at Diocesan Synod in May highlighted continuity in the diocese’s priorities, reflecting ongoing implementation of its ‘Plan for Change and Renewal.’
Key themes include supporting parish ministry, including clergy stipends, using assets strategically to fund mission, continuing investment in diocesan programmes and maintaining strong income from investments, particularly Glebe land.
Leaders stressed that financial decisions are being driven by mission priorities rather than purely economic considerations.
Governance decisions and concerns about engagement
Diocesan Synod approved a formal delegation of episcopal authority, allowing the Bishop of St Germans to act on behalf of the diocesan bishop in specified circumstances, including ordinations and licensing.
However, some members raised concerns about governance and engagement, questioning whether sufficient time is given to scrutinise major reports and suggesting agenda changes to allow fuller debate.
Leaders acknowledged the concerns and said they would review scheduling and meeting structures ahead of future sessions.
Mothers’ Union marks 150 years
A presentation marking the 150th anniversary of the Mothers’ Union, highlighting its growth from a local parish initiative in 1876 to a global movement with more than 4 million members across 84 countries was given at Diocesan Synod in May.
Speakers emphasised the organisation’s continuing role in pastoral care, community outreach and campaigning on issues such as domestic abuse, poverty and family support.
Looking ahead
While the diocese’s finances appear stable in the short term, members of Diocesan Synod heard that long-term sustainability would depend on increased giving, careful use of reserves, and continued delivery of strategic plans.
With major reviews of mission programmes, funding and diocesan structures expected later in 2026, members were told to expect further substantial discussions at future meetings.
